Hybrid Press Brake

What Is a Hybrid Press Brake?

If the introduction of the mechanical press brake a century ago seemed like a miracle to metalworkers, imagine how the owners of the first hydraulic press brakes must have felt. The power and precision of the CNC hydraulic brake has kept many a fab shop in business over the last few decades, while the more recent advent of the electric press brake has given cost-conscious and environmentally aware fabricators a viable alternative.

But what of those who want the power of a hydraulic brake with some of the cost savings of an electric brake? That’s where hybrid press brakes come in. Sometimes referred to as servo press brakes, hybrid hydraulic-electric brakes combine AC servo motors to control the direction of the ram while using the pressure provided by highly efficient hydraulic pumps to drive it (and the pumps only run during bending operations, unlike hydraulic brakes).

Revolution Machine Tools, a leader in the distribution of hydraulic press brakes, with over 50 models to choose from, also provides a line-up of hybrid press brakes for those wanting the advantages that they provide.

Specs and Features of the B-GENIUS-H™ 12-250 Hybrid Press Brake

A typical hybrid machine in RMT’s B-GENIUS-H™ series is the 250-ton RMT B-GENIUS-H™ 12-250 press brake, which features a bending length of 12′ 4″ (10′ 8″ between housings). The 12-250 has 21.7″ of daylight, an 11″ stroke, a 16.1″ throat depth, and sports a 15-gallon capacity oil tank.

This is a 7-axis CNC press brake, with Y1, Y2, X, R, Z1, Z2, and back CNC crowning. It can also be ordered with additional axes of control, such as X1, X2, R1, R2, X Prime (Delta X), and many more. The RMT B-GENIUS-H™ 12-250 is equipped with a Delem DA-66T touch screen CNC control unit with 3D graphical visualization, and can be upgraded to a Delem DA-69T touch screen 2D/3D CNC control or switched out to a Cybelec ModEva 10S/12S/15S 3D control with PC 1200 3D SW.

The B-GENIUS-H™ 12-250 has a Y-axis approach speed of 85 to 425 IPM (inches per minute), a Y-axis forming speed of up to 24 IPM (optionally expandable up to 50 IPM), a decompression speed of up to 24 IPM, and a Y-axis return speed of 94 to 472 IPM. It has an X-axis speed of 5 to 1181 IPM with 31.5″ of X-axis travel, and a third gaugeable finger of 41.7″. It has an R-axis speed of 5 to 828 IPM with an R-axis travel of 9.8″. It has a Z1-Z2-axis speed of 5 to 3425 IPM. The machine measures 227″ long by 89″ wide by 107″ tall and weighs approximately 28,010 lbs.

This energy-efficient hybrid brake saves 65% of the energy of an equivalent hydraulic brake while using 95% less oil. Its combination of servo motors and a highly efficient pump system provides a fast operation, and it is one of the most precise press brakes on the market, having a bending accuracy of +/- .00003″. It is also one of the quietest press brakes, operating at a noise level of 63db (TUV-SUD certified).

Its proportional valves prevent pressure loss, helping ensure the brake’s bending accuracy. Since the pumping system doesn’t run during standby mode, the B-GENIUS-H™ 12-250 doesn’t have the problem of oil heating up, and fewer oil changes are required (usually every 7000 working hours, rather than the standard 2000).

This servo press brake can accurately fade ram, do stage bending, determine bend sequences automatically, and calculate the stretch length of blanks. Its accuracy makes it perfect for flawlessly bending small parts at different points.

Other Models in the B-GENIUS-H™ Series

Besides the B-GENIUS-H™ 12-250, Revolution Machine Tools offers 18 other models in their hybrid series, running the gamut from 8′ to 14′ bending lengths (up to 20′ custom machines) and 110 to 300 ton bending capacities. All come with the standard 7-axis CNC and are expandable up to 14+ axes of control. They include:
