Santa, Put a Press Brake Under the Tree!
It was great news for fabricators when Congress restored 100% bonus depreciation for qualifying purchases earlier this year. That accelerated tax deduction was being phased out and was down to 40% for property placed in service after January 1, 2025, and would have been reduced to 20% in 2026. With the new legislation, any qualifying machines or property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025, now has the 100% rate, as does any purchased in 2026 and beyond.
Both bonus depreciation and Section 179 are IRS provisions allowing businesses to immediately deduct the cost of qualifying assets in the year they are placed in service, rather than depreciating them over several years. While different, they usually work in tandem to save fabricators and other business owners on their taxes.
The “Placed in Service” Catch
Both Section 179 and bonus depreciation stipulate that the deductions can be taken for the year the machines or other property is “placed in service.” That means that if you are planning to purchase a press brake at the end of the year and want to apply these deductions to it, the machine must be producing parts for your business at that time. It’s not enough to buy a machine, or even to install a machine, it must be “in service” by 11:59 PM on New Year’s Eve.
For fabricators ready to use their remaining annual budget (plus maybe some Christmas money from Grandma) to buy equipment for their shop, the machines need to be on the floor and producing before the end of the year. This creates a problem for the fabricator who is ordering a custom machine—or even a standard one—through a factory that has a long lead time for deliveries.
